FETÖ soldiers sentenced to multiple life terms for Erdoğan assassination bid

A court in southwestern Turkey's Muğla province started issuing verdicts on Wednesday in the trial of 40 soldiers accused of attempting to assassinate Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during last year's failed coup attempt, which was orchestrated by the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ), Daily Sabah reports.

The judge sentenced 34 defendants to four aggravated life imprisonments each and acquitted one suspect.

The "assassination team," led by former brigadier general Gökhan Şahin Sönmezateş, was assigned with capturing and assassinating the president during the July 15 coup attempt. Their attempt failed by minutes as Erdoğan, his family and accompanying officials left the hotel in the resort town of Marmaris, where the president was spending his vacation.
