Fabius: Assad must leave, but not now

The resignation of Syrian President Bashar Assad is necessary to resolve the conflict in this country, but this does not mean that his resignation should take place right now, the French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius stated in an interview with the newspaper Le Progres.

"The fight against ISIS is crucial, but it can be fully effective only if all Syrian and regional forces will unite. How is this possible if Bashar Assad will remain president, who committed so many atrocities and against whom a significant part of the population is opposed?" Interfax quoted him as asking.

"A united Syria implies a political transition. This does not mean that Assad must go before the transition, but we must have confidence in this in the future," the minister believes.
