Fire breaks out on Mount Mtatsminda in Georgia

A fire broke out on the slope of Mtatsminda, the mountain overlooking the capital city of Tbilisi, this afternoon, the country's Interior Ministry said in a statement.

According to the ministry, the fire was reported at 13:33 and fire-rescue teams of the Emergency Situations Management Agency arrived at the scene at 13:38.

More than 50 firemen and up to 10 units of fire engines are trying to extinguish the fire.  Firefighters and special engines approached the fire pocket from two directions. The ministry said that the water supply is being provided from a hydrant located on the mount.

It added that for effective fire-extinguishing reasons, a helicopter of the Interior Ministry has been involved in the operation, Agenda.ge reported.

The fire is not very far from residential areas but nobody has been hurt as a result of the blaze. Authorities said there is no danger that the fire will spread to the settlement.

It is the second time Mount Mtatsminda has caught on fire this month. Earlier, a massive fire broke out on August 8.
