First openly gay US Army Secretary appointed

Secretary of Defense Ash Carter's chief of staff, Eric Fanning, was sworn in Wednesday as the Secretary of the US Army, becoming the first openly gay leader of any US military service.

Fanning's nomination had been stalled since President Barack Obama picked him as acting secretary of the US Army last November.

He also worked as Special Assistant to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Defense. He was the acting secretary of the US Air Force in 2013.
