Former Israeli minister Gonen Segev was convicted by the Jerusalem District Court of spying for Iran in a plea bargain.
The statement says that Segev will serve 11 years in prison after confessing to severe espionage and passing information to an enemy. It says the agreement will be brought to a judge next month. It provided no further information.
Segev has been accused of providing Iran information about the "energy market and security sites in Israel." the New York Times reported.
Last year’s disclosure was another stunning turn for Segev, who served as energy minister under Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in the mid-1990s. He was arrested in 2004 for attempting to smuggle 32,000 illegal Ecstasy tablets from the Netherlands to Israel using an expired diplomatic passport, and served prison time for that.
