Georgia celebrates Mother's Day

Mother's Day is celebrated in Georgia on March 3. Initially, the holiday was conceived as an alternative to International Women's Day, but later it was decided to keep both dates.

The history of the holiday dates back to the presidency of Zviad Gamsakhurdia, who in 1991 submitted it to the Parliament for approval. It was planned that Mother's Day will replace the holiday canceled in the country - International Women's Day.

However, under the second president of Georgia, Eduard Shevardnadze, March 8 was included in the holiday calendar again at the initiative of the then speaker of parliament, Nino Burdzhanadze. Since then, Georgia has two official days off in March dedicated to women. On this day, children give their mothers flowers and small gifts.
