Georgia marks Victory Day

Georgia is marking the 72nd anniversary of the Victory Day together with other countries.

In Tbilisi each year on this date veterans, state officials and the general public gather at Vake Park to commemorate the day and lay wreaths at the memorial of the Unknown Soldiers who served in Georgia’s Armed Forces.

The country's Defense Minister Levan Izoria also laid a wreath at the memorial of the Unknown Soldiers.

More than 700 thousand people from Soviet Armenia participated in the Great Patriotic War, 400 thousand of them died, according to the numbers released by the State Service of Veterans Affairs of Georgia. 167 Georgians earned the name of 'Hero of the Soviet Union'. There are only 948 veterans left alive in the republic.
