Georgia's Modzmanashvil stripped of 2012 Olympic silver

Georgian freestyle wrestler Davit Modzmanashvili has been stripped of his 2012 London Olympics silver medal after testing positive for an anabolic steroid, the Georgia National Olympic Committee said.

The International Olympic Committee said yesterday that oral turinabol was found in Modzmanashvili’s sample in a reanalysis program using new testing methods.

Modzmanashvili was disqualified from the 120-kilogram freestyle class and faces being banned by the United World Wrestling governing body.

"The athlete, Davit Modzmanashvili, has the medal obtained in the Men’s Freestyle Wrestling 120kg event withdrawn and is ordered to return it," the IOC said in the statement.

The 32-year-old heavyweight has since switched national allegiance to Uzbekistan, the AP reported.

In London, Modzmanashvili lost the gold medal bout to Artur Taymazov of Uzbekistan.
