"Georgian Dream" to amend Constitution

The ruling party "Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia" has decided to amend the constitution to lower the electoral threshold for parties from 5% to 2% in fully proportional elections to be held from 2024, its chairman Irakli Kobakhidze said.

"After becomig a EU candidate in December this year, the Georgian parliament will adopt amendments to the Constitution within two months, according to which the parliamentary elections in 2024 and after will be held under a fully proportional system with a 2% threshold", Sputnik Georgia quotes him. .

Kobakhidze stressed that this is a political decision, its goal is to reduce polarization. He added that the lowering of the threshold most of all plays into the hands of the most powerful opposition party, the United National Movement: as a result, it will be able to get its partners into parliament.

Lowering the threshold is among the demands of the opposition and the non-governmental sector, but they demand that this be done now, without waiting for 2024.
