Georgian President holds meeting with Azerbaijani National Assembly Speaker

Bilateral relations between Georgia and Azerbaijan was one of the main topics of discussion between Georgian President Salome Zurabichvili and Azerbaijani National Assembly Speaker Sahiba Gafarova on Tuesday.

During the meeting, the officials highlighted the importance of strengthening political, economic and cultural ties between Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Zurabichvili pointed out that the South Caucasus region needed “peace and stability” in order to achieve its “full potential.”

"For our region to develop to its full potential, be it economic, transit or even cultural, what we need is peace and stability. And in these tough times, I’m convinced that it’s time for #womenleaders to have a strong voice," the Georgian president wrote on Twitter.

The Georgian President invited Gafarova to an upcoming international conference for female leaders, saying it was time for women leaders to “have a strong voice.”

On an official visit to Georgia, the National Assembly Speaker of Azerbaijan also held meetings with her Georgian counterpart Shalva Papuashvili and the country’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.
