The Georgian football team coach Willy Sagnol said he was "very proud" of his team after the country went out of Euro 2024 in the last 16 to Spain.

"You have to take some time to sit and look at what you have done. I think we can sit in peace and quiet and everyone can be very happy at the last year, because the evolution of the team, the squad, has been absolutely fantastic," Sagnol said.

The competition's surprise packages beat Portugal 2-0 in their last group game to reach the last 16, and they went ahead against Spain in Cologne thanks to Robin Le Normand's early own goal. That raised hope of a sensational upset but their dreams were crushed by a Spain comeback as they went down 4-1.

"I'm very proud of what the players have done in the last months. Now it's the end of a journey, but I'm sure the next one will also be very exciting," Sagnol said.

The Georgian team qualified for the knockout round of the Championship as the best third-placed team in the group stage, where they finished behind Portugal and Turkey in Group F after defeating the former 2-0 in the final game of the round. They also lost to Turkey on the opening matchday before drawing with Czechia.
