To comply with European standards for the number of prisoners, the Georgian government will soon announce an amnesty, releasing about 1,000 people. Prime Minister Kobhadize stressed that the authorities do not grant amnesty to murderers, terrorists and corrupt officials.

Today, Chairman of the Government of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze spoke about plans to declare a mass amnesty to relieve pressure on Georgian prisons, which now hold a record 10,200 people that were imprisoned during the years of the Georgian Dream rule.

Kobakhidze stressed that due to the release of prisoners, security problems will not arise in Georgia, since murderers, drug sellers, rapists, robbers, terrorists, corrupt officials, slave traders, “thieves in law” and anyone who has committed serious crimes are not subject to amnesty.

According to the politician, the amnesty will be carried out only under 66 articles out of 305 of the Criminal Code of Georgia and in several options: complete release, reduction of the prison term by 50%, 25%, 16.66%, or subtraction of one year from the suspended sentence.
