Ambassador Axel Dittmann was called to the Iranian Foreign Ministry following the German Chancellor's remarks.
"During the meeting (with Alireza Yousefi, Director General for Western Europe), the Islamic Republic of Iran expressed its strong protest to the Ambassador against the interventionist and irresponsible statements by German officials",
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic reported.
The previous day, Chancellor Merz expressed regret that one or two other EU countries were not prepared to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. He also voiced support for a policy of maximum pressure on the Iranian government.
Earlier today, EU foreign ministers agreed to impose further sanctions on Iran.
