Payments for supplied Russian natural gas in rubles are technically possible but this will force the EU to circumvent sanctions it imposed and will fuel the discussion on the embargo on Russian energy resources, Head of the Energy and Climate Protection Committee in the German Bundestag Klaus Ernst said.
"Yes, it will be technically possible to make payment in rubles. It is reasonable from the Russia’s standpoint," the lawmaker said, noting that the German government intended to continue buying Russian energy resources.
"The decision of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin would force countries in the ‘unfriendly states’ list to circumvent adopted sanction measures. This may further fuel discussions on the boycott of Russian energy resources," TASS cited Ernst as saying. "The immediate boycott of Russian energy resources would have serious adverse implications for Europe," the lawmaker added.
