Heat waves to stay in Russian regions for another week

‘‘Forty-degree (Celsius; 104 Fahrenheit) heat will continue in some regions of Russia for another week,’’ the head of Roshydromet (Russian Meteorological Service) situation center, Yury Varakin, stated. He stressed that the abnormal weather in August was not a surprise for EMERCOM and regional authorities, as weather forecasters had warned about it at the end of July.

According to Varakin, the heat has not had negative effect on crops of grain. On the contrary, the weather became the reason for a lot mushrooms in a number of Russian regions.

Forecasters warned about the unusual heat at the end of July during EMERCOM selector meetings.

According to the source, forty-degree heat (which is a 4-5 fire hazard category) will last until August 13th in Crimea, the Stavropol Territory, with exception of mountainous area where short-term thunderstorms are expected. Over the past two days, thunderstorms hit Kabardino-Balkaria and North Ossetia.

"The temperature of +38-40 C˚, and in some places up to 41 C˚ will stay in the Astrakhan, Volgograd, Saratov and Rostov regions, as well as in the Republic of Kalmykia, in the Kuban Territory and in the lower reaches of the Kuban River, the Sea of ​​Azov at least until August 10th. It will be slightly cooler on the Black Sea coast,’’ Varakin said.

Moscow will be one of the first city to enjoy some cool weather, as the cold weather front is moving towards the central region, Tass reports.

"It will move from the north-west to the south-east –  from the Tver and Smolensk regions to Moscow, Kaluga, Tver and Ryazan. Tonight we are expecting heavy rains in Moscow,’’ the head of Roshydromet said.

It is expected that by Thursday the temperature will go down to +27-28 Cº.
