IS militants behead director of Palmyra architectural complex

Members of the banned terrorist group Islamic State (IS) have assassinated the famous explorer and archaeologist, director of the architectural and historical complex in the Syrian city of Palmyra, Khaled Asaad, the Director of the Department of Antiquities and Museums of Syria, Maamun Abdel Kerim said.

"It's hard to imagine that such a scientist, who made such a great contribution to the development of this place (Palmyra), and history, was beheaded," TASS quoted him as saying.

Khaled Asaad was killed by the terrorists at the age of 82, for 50 years of which he was engaged in researching the architectural and historical complex Palmyra. In recent decades, he has worked together with the archaeological mission from the United States, France, Germany and Switzerland. According to Abdel Kerim's information, Asaad was captured by the terrorists about a month ago.
