ISIS says Strasbourg shooter was its soldier

The terrorist group ISIS (outlawed in Russia) said the man who killed three people in Strasbourg was one of its soldiers, the group’s Amaq news website said, although it provided no evidence for the claim.

An online statement from the group’s Amaq news agency said the attacker "was an ISIS soldier and carried out the operation in response to calls for targeting citizens of coalition countries" fighting the militant group in Syria and Iraq, Reuters reported.

It was earlier reported that the suspected gunman, Cherif Chekatt, was shot dead yesterday in a brief gun battle with police after being on the run for 48 hours.

On December 12, at about 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT), a man opened fire close to the famed Christmas market near Place Kléber, which attracts thousands of visitors. Three people have died following the shooting at the market and several more were seriously injured.
