On Saturday, the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, called Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to discuss the situation in the South Caucasus.

During the conversation, Charles Michel touched upon the issues that were discussed at the tripartite meetings on December 14, 2021-August 31, 2022. He assured that the EU intends to ensure sustainable peace and security in the South Caucasus. The head of the European Council mentioned the Lachin-Khankendi road issue and shared his concern over the latest  clashes on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Baku supports the Brussels process, Ilham Aliyev said. The Lachin road is not blocked, the opposite assertions of Armenia are false, he stressed, recalling that since the beginning of the eco-action, about 5,000 cars have passed along the road. The Azerbaijani president pointed out that the supply of weapons, ammunition and fighters by the Armenian side continues on the territory. Moreover, the leadership of Armenia makes dangerous statements that could lead to the escalation. Ilham Aliyev recalled the incidents on March 5 and 20, as a result of which two servicemen of the Azerbaijani army were killed and one was injured. These incidents are the result of Armenia's dangerous policy, Ilham Aliyev said.
