Ilham Aliyev: peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia can be signed in a few months

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in an interview with the Italian newspaper İl Sole 24 Ore that Baku is absolutely ready to develop and sign a peace treaty with Yerevan, there are all the necessary conditions for it.

"The situation in our region is developing in a peaceful direction, I hope so. I arrived in Italy from Brussels. There we had a trilateral meeting with the President of the Council of the European Union and the Prime Minister of Armenia. We agreed that within a month the Foreign Ministers Azerbaijan and Armenia would meet to start practical negotiations related to a peace agreement",first of all, he recalled the meeting with Nikol Pashinyan on August 31.

"We proposed it, one might say, immediately after the end of the Second Karabakh War. We declared that we needed peace, a peace agreement. It took Armenia almost two years to agree to this. I consider this one of the most important outcomes of the meeting", Azerbaijani president stressed.

"Of course, a lot will depend on the peace talks' course, for example, what will be the time frame and content. I think that we can prepare and sign a peace agreement within a few months. If the Armenian side shows the same will, then I think it's real. We have put forward five basic principles on which the peace agreement should be based, and Armenia has accepted them", Ilham Aliyev concluded.
