The number of people killed by terrorism increased by 80% in 2014, reaching the highest level ever recorded at 32,658. This compares to 18,111 in 2013, the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) said, based on information about deaths and damage from terrorist attacks in 162 countries.
IS and Boko Haram are responsible for 51% of all terrorist attacks. 8% of all deaths occurred in five countries: Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan and Syria. The most difficult situation is in Iraq - nearly 10 thousand people were killed in 2014 due to terrorist attacks.
"The Paris incident in many ways is a watershed within Europe. It shows that IS has the capabilities to be able to launch sophisticated and deadly attacks in Europe," Interfax cited the head of the Institute, Steve Killelea, as saying.
