Head of the Russian Region of Ingushetia Yunus-bek Yevkurov has announced his intention to resign.
"I have made the decision to ask Russian President Vladimir Putin with a request to accept my resignation," he said yesterday in an address broadcast by the region’s national TV.
Yevkurov, who has headed the Russian Region of Ingushetia since 2008, said that dissociation of the region’s authorities and the public prompted him to leave the post of the region’s head.
"Let’s be brave enough to say that we all - the power that I represent, public, religious and other organizations are responsible for our dissociation today. We are all facing a choice, personal interests or interests of our home region and everyone acts in accordance with the upbringing, ideals and notions on the statehood of our region. I call on all invested sides to make their choice, mine has already been made," he said.
He underlined that unity is necessary for the region’s development.
"I have already said that there is a program for the development of our region, there are plans and confidence that these plans are achievable. However, one of the main conditions for that is the unity of our people. I can clearly see that today it is being tested," he explained.
Yunus-bek Yevkurov was appointed the head of the Russian republic of Ingushetia on 31 October 2008 after Murat Zyazikov's resignation. In 2009, Yevkurov survived an assassination attempt but was heavily wounded and spent more than a month in a hospital.
