Finland said it will purchase Israel’s David’s Sling missile defense system in an initial deal worth some 316 million euros ($344 mln).

“This acquisition will create a new capability for the Finnish Defense Forces to intercept targets at high altitude,” Finland’s Ministry of Defense said.

The purchase consists of a main contract worth about €213 million as well as the immediate exercise of options worth €103 million, and additionally further options worth €216 million, the ministry said.

The Finish announcement came the day after Helsinki joined the NATO military alliance. The transaction will require a sales release by the US government.
