Jens Stoltenberg welcomes Russian participation in fight against Daesh

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the Munich Security Conference today welcomed the participation of Russia in the fight against the Daesh terrorist group, which is prohibited in Russia, in Syria, the head of the European Office of Vestnik Kavkaza reports from Munich.

"NATO welcomes Russia's help in the fight against the Islamic State terrorist group," Stoltenberg said.

He also spoke positively about the Russian initiative for a ceasefire in Syria on March 1. "As for the agreement on the weekly cease-fire in Syria, real practice shows that that such agreements are often violated, but we hope for a long-term solution to the conflict, and at this stage we expect that the parties will adhere to the agreed arrangements," NATO Secretary General said.

At the same time, Jens Stoltenberg traditionally accused Russia of supporting President Bashar al-Assad. "Russia's bombing of the Syrian opposition groups undermines the peace process in Syria," he said.
