Jose Henrique Medeiros Pires: Brazil welcomes inclusion of historic center of Sheki to UNESCO’s World Heritage List

Azerbaijan and Brazil cooperate very closely in the sphere of culture, Special Secretary for Culture under Brazil's Ministry of Citizenship Jose Henrique Medeiros Pires said, speaking with the corespondent of Vestnik Kavkaza on the sidelines of the 43rd session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Baku.

First of all, he congratulated Azerbaijan on the inclusion of the historic center of Sheki with the Khan's Palace to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. "We are pleased that Sheki was added to the World Heritage List, we understand that for Azerbaijan it is just as important as the inclusion of Brasilia's historical and natural sites on this list. It is very important for us to preserve cultural wealth, and the new status of Sheki will help Azerbaijan bring the importance of this city to people," he noted.

The Special Secretary for Culture under Brazil's Ministry of Citizenship announced plans to attract Azerbaijani tourists to Brazilian resorts and told about the Azerbaijani volleyball team's soon visit to the country. "In two weeks, a tournament will be held in southeastern Brazil, which serves as a qualifier for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The Azerbaijani team will be among the participants," the diplomat said.

"We also want to develop our cultural relations, we want to bring Brazilian cinema to Azerbaijan and, on the contrary, screen Azerbaijani films in Brazil," Jose Henrique Medeiros Pires drew attention to the plans for cultural cooperation between the two countries.

The Special Secretary for Culture under Brazil's Ministry of Citizenship added that he held talks with Azerbaijan's Minister of Culture Abulfas Garayev. "We discussed many cultural exchange issues, including the topic of exchanging culinary experience, mutual chief training in the national culinary traditions of Brazil and Azerbaijan," he said.
