In accordance with the decree of the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the city of Kapshagai, Almaty region, was renamed Konaev. Akorda informs that the decree comes into effect from the day of its first official publication.
On March 16, 2022, in a message to the people of Kazakhstan, Tokayev proposed to rename Kapshagay to Kunaev and make the city the centre of the Almaty region.
Later, the local maslikhat decided to rename the city of Kapshagay to Dinmukhamed Kunaev, the names of the new regions were approved by the onomastic commission.
