Kazakh security forces kill 13 extremists linked to weekend attacks

Kazakh security forces have killed 13 suspected militants who took part in a weekend attack in the northwestern city of Aktobe that authorities blamed on religious extremists, the Interior Ministry said Tuesday, Dailywitness.com reports.

“To date, 13 criminals have been killed, four wounded, and seven are still on the run,” ministry spokesman Almas Sadubayev said at a Tuesday press briefing.

He said measures have been taken to locate and arrest the “extremists” who escaped.

On Sunday, more than a dozen armed men attacked two gun shops and a National Guard military base in Aktobe.

Twelve people died in the attacks Sunday: two civilians, a security guard, three guardsmen and six militants.

In response, security forces immediately launched a counter-terrorist operation in the city.

“The whole of the country’s authorities remain under emergency protocol. The situation in the city and in the rest of the country is normal and under control,” Sadubayev said.

On Monday, Kazakhstan declared a yellow (moderate) level terrorist threat for 40 days.
