Kerry and Cavusoglu discuss situation in Middle East

The US Secretary of State John Kerry and the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed the situation in the Middle East and the fight against Daesh in Washington.

"The two ministers discussed our joint efforts to degrade and defeat Daesh in Syria and Iraq, including measures to secure the Turkey-Syria border and disrupt terrorist facilitation networks," the State Department's report says.

In addition, they discussed the political settlement in Syria, noting the need to maintain the cessation of hostilities and expand humanitarian assistance to affected communities.
Kerry and Cavusoglu discussed ways to resolve the conflict in Cyprus and situation in Turkey.

"Secretary Kerry underscored the importance we place on the maintenance of strong democratic institutions in Turkey, including free media and judicial due process," RIA Novosti cited the State Department's message as saying.
