Konstantin Kosachev to Vestnik Kavkaza: Russophobes drive Trump into corner

Currently, the US president Donald Trump is under strong pressure from the Russophobes in power, because of which the new Washington is forced to do such steps as political statements about the need to talk with Russia from a position of strength and demand the returning of Crimea, the chairman of the Federation Council’s Foreign Affairs committee, Konstantin Kosachev, said, speaking to Vestnik Kavkaza.

The senator expressed confidence that now anti-Russian lobbyists are consistently "driving Trump into a corner". "They are forcing him to make excuses of himself in things which he didn't say. It seems to me that Trump had never made pro-Russian statements. His position was that they should talk with Russia and seek common ground - it is Trump's radical difference from Obama," Konstantin Kosachev noted.

But still Trump is the US president. "In all other areas Trump's policy is like Obama's. They are both rigidly focused on the US national interests, the US leadership in the world. But even President Trump's desire to start a conversation with Russia to clarify the relations was not acceptable to the American Russophobes," the chairman of the Federation Council’s Foreign Affairs committee stressed.

The US Congress is the basis of the anti-Russian lobby in the American establishment. "There is a bipartisan consensus against Russia in the Congress. There are people there who have built their political careers on anti-Russian initiatives, on the representation of Russia as a major problem for the United States. Of course, they will not give up their positions, because it would mean the end of their political careers," Konstantin Kosachev noted.

"Trump may withstand this pressure, but he can also break down, it is not yet clear. As long as he is surrounded by Russophobes very seriously and is clearly not ready to go beyond those red flags placed for him. Now he is in a situation where circumstances control him, and not vice versa," the senator concluded.
