A future decision whether or not Russian President Vladimir Putin will participate in the forthcoming G20 summit will depend on the situation, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday. In any case the Kremlin will be "oriented mostly towards the organizer," Indonesia, he added.
Earlier, Bloomberg quoted sources as saying that the US had put pressure on Indonesia to demand Putin should be barred from the G20 summit. The agency speculated that if the Russian president retained the right to participate, the leaders of some countries might refuse to attend or would send lower-level delegations. Also, it is not ruled out that the summit may not adopt a joint communique for the first time ever.
"We will be clarifying this. After all, Indonesia is the presiding country and the organizer. Naturally, we will be oriented towards the organizers in the first place. A future decision regarding participation will be made based on how the situation develops," Peskov said when asked if Moscow had received any messages and if Putin would participate in the summit.
