Kyrgyz National Security Committee chair ready to resign

Kyrgyzstan's State National Security Committee Chairman Orozbek Opumbaev believes he should resign following the unsuccessful operation in Koi-Tash to detain former President Almazbek Atambayev.

"I told President Sooronbay Jeenbekov in the morning at the Security Council meeting that I would like to resign. What has happened is actually my fault," Opumbaev said at the extraordinary session of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan today.

"Perhaps it was necessary to involve 3,500 unarmed fighters. Then they would have ensured the security of the special forces," AKIpress cited him as saying.

On Wednesday, the special forces of Kyrgyzstan’s State Committee for National Security attempted to detain Atambayev in his residence in Koi-Tash village but failed. The supporters of the former president were guarding the residence and managed to repel the attack, disarming the special forces officers and capturing six of them. Clashes between the additional police forces that were deployed to the site and Atambayev’s supporters ensued in Koi-Tash. The number of those who sought medical help is 52, one officer was killed.
