Russia, together with Arab partners, the US and the European Union, is making every effort to promote the unification of the opposition forces in Syria. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated this at a meeting with the former coordinator of the National Coordinating Committee of Syria, Haytham Manaa.
"Today we are meeting against the background of growing understanding of the inadmissibility of the status quo in the region, especially in Syria. It has become clear, even to those who have expressed doubts about it, that the main task is to prevent seizure of even larger areas by terrorists," RIA Novosti quotes Lavrov as saying.
According to the minister, the Russian side believes that it is essential "to substantially increase efforts to promote a political settlement of the situation in Syria on the basis of the Geneva Communique and with the support of the actions being taken by the UN special envoy."
