Major fire breaks out in central Tbilisi

A fire that broke out in a state-owned building in the central district of Aghmashenebeli in Tbilisi late at night has been localised, the local governor Zurab Chikviladze said.

According to him, the building was empty and no one has been injured.

"Unfortunately the fire broke out in one of the significant buildings in Tbilisi, which is a cultural monument," Agenda.ge cited Chikviladze as saying.

He added that the reason for the fire is yet unknown, but an investigation of the case is underway.

According to the preliminary information, the fire had spread on the roof of the building. Twelve fire-fighting brigades worked to extinguish the fire.
