Margvelashvili: When prohibitions do not yield good result, it is better to lift them

When a policy does not yield good result, when prohibitions do not yield good result, it is better to lift the prohibitions and let people decide their fate on their own, Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili said after meeting with NGOs working on drug-related issues, InterPressNews reported.

The main topic of the meeting was the draft law on which the Parliament works. According to the President, future meetings were scheduled at the meeting.

"I spoke to the group, which has long been working on the topic, which is extremely important for the public. This is formation of a more adequate drug policy instead of the violent one has been ruining lives of many people in Georgia and which could not improve the drug statistics. Therefore, we see today that the current drug policy harms many people and also creates problems for the law enforcers as well. And we also see a group that is working on a more human drug policy. I am glad that this topic is being discussed in our society. I am glad that we are abandoning the stereotypes that had been stigmatizing our citizens. I would like to say that when a policy does not yield good result, when prohibitions do not yield good result, it is better to lift the prohibitions and let people decide their fate on their own”, said Margvelashvili.
