Maria Edileuza Fontenele Reis: Brazil supports inclusion of historic center of Sheki to UNESCO’s World Heritage List from very beginning

The inclusion of the historic center of Sheki to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List was due to the Azerbaijani authorities' highest level of work to preserve its history and culture, Permanent Delegate of Brazil to UNESCO Maria Edileuza Fontenele Reis said, speaking with the corespondent of Vestnik Kavkaza on the sidelines of the 43rd session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Baku.

Fontenele Reis chaired the session, at which it was decided to add the historic center of Sheki with the Khan's Palace to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

"I see that whole Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijani authorities support the highest, remarkable level of preservation of historical and natural monuments. We are all very proud of this great nomination - from the very beginning, Brazil has supported the Sheki nomination, and we are very happy that the historic center of Sheki was added to the World Heritage List," the Permanent Delegate of Brazil to UNESCO said in the first place.

She also welcomed the inclusion of two Brazilian sites to the World Heritage List - Paraty and Ilha Grande: Culture and Biodiversity. "Now we will apply twice as much effort to preserve this beautiful natural object. We are happy that our country has objects of global importance recognized by the international community. But it is also a great responsibility and we must ensure sustainable development for them, advancement sustainable tourism and, of course, protection," Maria Edileuza Fontenele Reis stressed.

The inclusion of the historic center of Sheki with the Khan's Palace to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List  was supported by China, Indonesia, Kuwait, Tunisia and Kyrgyzstan.
