Maria Zakharova: Russian and US plan is path to peace in Syria

The Russian-US plan to resolve the Syrian crisis may become the basis for an end to the war and a return of peaceful life to Syria, and it is not about a two-week truce, but about the prospect of an indefinite ceasefire, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, stated today, the correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza reports.

"Colleagues from the Russian Ministry of Defense give us materials on the reconciliation process in Syria, and now we know that the total number of local agreements on reconciliation has increased to 38. At the same time, 31 cases of violations of such agreements were recorded. In connection with this, we urge our partners to adhere to their commitments, and members of the International Syrian Support Group and other international players, in fact, to support the Russian-US plan on Syria with concrete steps," she stressed.

She noted that Moscow expresses its hope for the absence of a "plan B" of the United States in case of resumption of hostilities, of which senior American officials make statements. "We believe that now it is necessary to very carefully, conscientiously and responsibly approach the implementation of the Russian-American agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Syria," Maria Zakharova urged.

At the same time, the subsequent fate of Syria is in the hands of its citizens only. "Our position on the state apparatus of Syria has not changed: the agenda of domestic dialogue is what Syrians themselves should be engaged in. The solution of the Syrian crisis currently involves many states, but for us, the future of Syria is democratic, complete and united," she stated.

The deteriorating situation in Afghanistan also causes concern of the Russian Foreign Ministry. "The number of hostilities and attacks increases. The US, NATO and several countries unilaterally stopped cooperation with Russia on settling the situation in Afghanistan, however, Russia is open to cooperation," Maria Zakharova confirmed.

"It seems that the US is seeking to oust all of Russia's proposals and construct the discussion in an anti-Russian tone. One of the main tasks is to find a common compromise on all key issues," she concluded.
