Maria Zakharova to Vestnik Kavkaza: Caspian Convention is example of mutually beneficial decision

The Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea promotes the development, cooperation and security of all five Caspian states, the Russian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Maria Zakharova said, answering a question from Vestnik Kavkaza.

"Signing of the Convention on legal status of the Caspian Sea at the 5th Caspian summit in Aktau contributes to the strengthening of stability and predictability in relations between the five Caspian countries, creation of favorable conditions for the expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation, formation of a clear, legal situation in the region as a whole," she noted in the first place.

"Its provisions establish the regime of navigation and the order of the collective use of the Caspian Sea, and settle the principles of non-presence of the armed forces of non-Caspian States, the use of Maritime space exclusively for peaceful purposes, regulate the establishment of the boundaries of territorial waters, fishing areas, the delimitation of the bottom, subsoil for use, other issues of vital importance for coastal states," Maria Zakharova added.

"We are confident that this document will promote economic cooperation, investment attractiveness, competitiveness of the Caspian five, implementation of joint projects aimed at accelerating development and full potential in the most advanced industries. Increasing predictability and reducing various risks in one of the most important areas of Eurasia is beneficial to all," the Russian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson stressed.

Working on the convention and working out an agreement became an example of making a decision through diplomacy and the negotiation process, which would suit everyone, and would bring bonuses to every state, Maria Zakharova concluded.
