Maria Zakharova to Vestnik Kavkaza: Western anti-Russian sanctions are illegitimate

On Thursday, Maria Zakharova, Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, answering a question from Vestnik Kavkaza at a briefing about Russia's assessment of Turkey's and Georgia's refusal to participate in anti-Russian sanctions by the West, pointed out that Western sanctions are illegitimate.

"The anti-Russian sanctions of the West are not legitimate because they have not passed the appropriate... Yes, I'm not even talking about the procedural issue now... It’s a part of a larger plan, and they didn’t hide it. These are illegal sanctions. These sanctions destroy", she said.

Zakharova noted that sometimes the principle is more important than the damage caused, but Western sanctions destroy and harm even those who impose them.

“Yes, it happens, it really happens in life, that a principle is more important than even the damage that its implementation causes you. This happens when you defend the truth, when you defend and work in favor of the most important principles of human existence.

But when these sanctions are illegitimate under the law, when these sanctions are hypocritical in their essence, when the purpose of why they are introduced is to destroy one, and not save the other, how can it be tolerated that they harm even those who accept them?", the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued.

"It's absurd, it's short-sighted. I'm not talking about decency. Unfortunately, for many, this term has been lost in international affairs. But at least there should be some logic in actions", Zakharova concluded .
