Maria Zakharova to Vestnik Kavkaza: anti-Russian threats of US Congress are absurd and insignificant

The threats that Russia still receives from representatives of the US leadership, including the US Congress' Ben Cardin' promise to create a new comprehensive law, which will become America's response to the "hooligan actions of Russia in Ukraine, Syria and US elections," are absurd, insignificant and detached from reality, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

She said that several years ago, representatives of one of the western information agencies wondered why Moscow considers it necessary to respond to anti-Russian remarks of, for example, John McCain, which allegedly represent "completely outdated Russophobic map", which no one takes seriously now.

According to her, on the one hand, such remarks are so absurd and insignificant that we should not respond to them: they have no connection to reality and are not supported by any facts. "On the other hand, we understand that the present stage of development of the information space, mass media, requires truth. And there is a rule: if you don't respond to accusations that were made in your address, then, unfortunately, you let people and their positions to dominate, you don't exist in the information space," she explained.

The diplomat once again stressed that such statements don't correspond to the reality at all. "We are working together with the US in Syria, try to do something about Ukraine for so many years, participate in international formats. Actually, we have initiated a lot of things that now became an important part of these international formats," she recalled.

"As for the US elections, I can't understand how Russia influenced them? How Russia could influence them? Many people talk about it, but nobody can provide specific facts or quotes or at least some arguments. So to summarize it all: those are insignificant remarks," she said.
