Marneuli 500 kv: New $20m substation improves power supply in Georgia

People living in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi and the country’s Kvemo Kartli region will now enjoy better electricity supply thanks to the new Marneuli 500 kv substation that was officially opened today, Agenda.ge reports.

Marneuli 500 kv substation was built by the Georgian State Electrosystem with the financial support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) within the Regional Power Transmission Enhancement Project. A total of $20 million was spent on Marneuli 500 kv substation which was today opened by Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili and Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze.

PM Kvirikashvili believed a modern substation Marneuli 500 kv , equipped with the latest technologies could increase Georgia’s power generation and move the country one step closer towards energy independence. "This project is an important part of the $50 million Regional Power Transmission Enhancement Project and Ten Year Network Development Plan of Georgia. The plan included €735 million investments in order to develop the country’s power transmission system. The projects are important for providing better electricity supply for the local population as well as cementing Georgia’s role as an energy transit country,” said Kvirikashvili.
