Marzieh Afham becomes first female ambassador of Iran

Marzieh Afham, who previously was the official representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, has been appointed as the ambassador of Iran to Malaysia, thus becoming the first-ever woman to hold such a high position.

Speaking at today's meeting with the new Iranian ambassadors to Senegal, Thailand, Philippines, Belgium, Pakistan, Greece, Denmark, Sri Lanka and Malaysia, President Hassan Rouhani stressed that the appointment of Marzieh Afham "should be seen as a demonstration of opportunities for Iranian women in the country.

"Women of Iran are actively participating, and very successfully, in such areas as commercial and sport, in the sphere of governance. And the recent appointment of the Iranian woman to the post of ambassador clearly shows that gender issues are of no importance when it comes to the question of to whom entrust large-scale, long-term obligations", - TASS quoted him as saying.
