Masimov: we need international convention on countering terrorism

Astana supports the adoption of an international convention on countering terrorism, the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Karim Masimov, said at the opening of the South and Central Asia Regional Conference on countering violent extremism.

"I would like to note that there is no international comprehensive convention adopted for countering violent extremism, which could be an important document for us," he said.  The current international agreement is aimed at countering some forms of extremism, so "the work in this direction is big and needs to be done soon. We are ready to take all the necessary measures aimed at countering this evil and are always open to cooperation," the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan said.

In his opinion, "we have to establish mutually beneficial dialogue with functional forces ready to counter violent extremism". "We have to continue the work on further strengthening of contacts and development of cooperation between special forces and departments," Masimov believes.

He drew attention to the fact that "the Internet is used by terrorist groups to spread destructive ideology, gain recruits, exchange information, plan and organize terrorist acts." "Kazakhstan detects and blocks extremist materials and websites. However, our efforts in this direction should be jointly and consistent," TASS cited him as saying.
