Matviyenko comments on first results of truce in Syria

The first results of the truce in Syria inspire some optimism, despite the obvious difficulty of this process, the speaker of Russia’s Federation Council, Valentina Matviyenko, said.

"More than a hundred armed organizations have already announced a ceasefire," the senator said. "Initially, we knew that it would be a very difficult process," she added.

"It is clear that not everyone is interested in a peaceful outcome. There is some kind of resistance and unwillingness to provide peace in Syria," TASS cited Matviyenko as saying.

At the same time, the agreement of the United States and Russia on the cessation of hostilities is hard to underestimate. According to her, "this is a breakthrough agreement of two states."

She said that Russia would "do everything to expand the truce," using its influence in the region. Matviyenko expressed hope that the US and other countries will also "actively promote the establishment of a ceasefire."
