Media: UK to switch to jet fuel from vegetable oil

The UK is planning to produce "green" jet fuel made from used vegetable oil and other waste, the Daily Mail newspaper reported, citing senior industry officials.

The Global Britain Commission, whose members are the heads of Virgin Atlantic, Heathrow, Ernst & Young and Mace, said that the creation of such jet fuel will bring billions of pounds to the national economy, increase the number of jobs and achieve key environmental goals, RIA Novosti reports.

It will also reduce dependence on Russian energy resources, since most of the aircraft of British airlines use the fuel that Moscow supplies to Rotterdam now.

The conflict in Ukraine has demonstrated the vulnerability of supply chains, so the creation of ecofuel will help to ensure the British energy security, said John Holland-Kaye,Heathrow Airport's CEO.
