Medvedev: Internet should be regulated

Moscow calls for equal regulation of the Internet by all countries, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev stated at the 2nd world conference on Internet governance, saying that the Internet should be open but it is necessary to regulate it.

According to him, no country can claim the role of a universal regulator.

"Therefore, we support the policy of strengthening the role of the international community in the governance of the Internet and the development of a global approach in this area. We believe that this should be conducted under the auspices of leading international institutions, including the United Nations, and rely on one sector-specific (UN) organization, the International Telecommunication Union," Sputnik Georgia reports.

Medvedev noted the Internet is a new and complex subject for regulation.
