Merkel: European Commission not to stop Nord Stream-2

The European Commission will not be able to stop implementation of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project despite adoption of amendments to the E.U. Gas Directive, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told an audience in Ravensburg.

"The Gas Directive gives the European Commission more opportunities for objection. But it will not hamper it (the project)," Handelsblatt cited Merkel as saying.

"On the whole I believe that it (the project) is acceptable," she added.

Merkel noted that the issue of gas transit through Ukraine is the key one. "Ukraine should remain the transit country despite the Nord Stream-2," the German Chancellor stressed.

She recalled that Gazprom is implementing the project together with Germany’s E.ON and BASF, Royal Dutch Shell, OMV, and France’s Engie.
