A settlement of the Syrian crisis requires both military and political measures, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated in an interview to the radio station Deutschlandfunk.
"Regarding Syria, from the first I said: we need military efforts, but they will not lead to a solution; we need a political process, but in reality, so far it is not going too well," Interfax quoted her as saying.
According to the Chancellor, Russia can play an important role in the political settlement of the conflict on a par with the United States, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Germany, France and Britain.
At the same time, Angela Mekrel stressed that Syrian President Bashar Assad should be one of the participants in the negotiations.
