Monkeypox cases triple in Europe, WHO informs

Over the past two weeks, the monkeypox epidemic has accelerated in Europe. The number of cases has tripled, WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge said.

In total, over 5,000 cases of infection have been confirmed in 51 countries, of which about 90% of cases are in European countries, Kluge added. In the region, the disease has been reported in 31 countries. According to Kluge, 99% of the patients are men.

The WHO representative in Russia, Dr Melita Vujnovic, said that the risk of the emergence of the virus in Russia is high. “The risk is considered high in the WHO European Region due to reports of a geographically widespread outbreak that has covered several new affected countries, as well as a somewhat atypical clinical picture of cases,” she warned, RIA Novosti informs.
