The former US Assistant Secretary for the South Caucasus, former US ambassador to Azerbaijan, Matthew Bryza, said that a possible meeting between Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan will not bring any breakthrough decisions in the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.
"It is impossible to achieve peace while there is no trust between the sides. I do not see any chance that the meeting will bring results, but it must take place in order to start building trust," Bryza said.
The former ambassador suggested that Russia is not really interested in resolving the conflict, as it's convenient for Moscow to "manipulate the sides."
"Russia does not need war, but there are still no chances of promotion at the moment," he added.
Matthew Bryza also advised the authorities of Armenia to reduce its dependence on Russian investors and to pay attention to its energy security.
According to the former US official, the fall in oil prices gives Azerbaijan the time to undertake the necessary reforms, which will further strengthen the economic potential of the country.
"Azerbaijan is a successful, independent, rich country, where the standard of living improves. Azerbaijan should continue continue gaining strength," Trend cited Bryza as saying.
