New York City residents urged to wear face coverings in public

New York City urged all residents to wear homemade masks when they go out in public to control the spread of the coronavirus, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

De Blasio stressed that New Yorkers should not seek out professional grade masks coveted by healthcare workers, but can fashion their own coverings for the nose and mouth out of a scarf or bandanna.

"It doesn’t have to be fancy to work. It can be real homegrown," Politico cited de Blasio as saying.

"We’re advising New Yorkers to wear a face covering when you go outside and will be near other people,” de Blasio said. "When you put on that face covering, you’re protecting everyone else. A lot of people out there, right this minute, don’t even know they have it."

The coronavirus has spread rapidly throughout the city, reaching 49,707 confirmed cases on Thursday. The virus has killed at least 1,562 people.
