Nino Lomjaria approved as Georgia's public defender

Georgia's former deputy head of the State Audit Office and an ex-chairperson of the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy (ISFED), Nino Lomjaria, has become the country's new public defender.

Lomjaria was named by the Georgian Dream ruling party and she was able to gain the support of 96 lawmakers at today’s voting in the legislative body.

Only five MPs voted against her in the 150-member parliament, Agenda.ge reported.

Her opponent Giorgi Popkhadze, named by the Alliance of Patriots parliamentary minority, received 20 votes, while 27 voted against him.

Lomjaria will replace Ucha Nanuashvili in the role for the next five years.
